Greg Brooks has been in the building supply business since 1968. He started as a yard worker in Denver, and came up through the ranks -load-builder, truck driver, yard foreman, sales, and management - working for independent lumberyards in Colo. and Calif. In 1986 he joined Wickes Lumber (then the No. 1 U.S. dealer) and spent three years developing technical training for salespeople. He also spent two years as training director for Babbitt's, a seven-unit lumberyard chain in Flagstaff, Ariz.
In 1991 he went out on his own as a freelance writer for ProSales magazine and a course developer producing training materials for various clients. During that period he co-authored Building Material Product Knowledge and wrote The Estimator's Encyclopedia: A Remodeling Project Selling Guide, both published by the North American Retail Hardware Association.
He served as editor-in-chief of ProSales from 1995 to 2000. In 1999, he launched the Building Supply Channel, Inc. in a joint venture with 17 investors, including ten leading independent LBM dealers, to develop online training for building supply employees. BSCi operates BSCiLMS.com and develops custom training programs for building material dealers, distributors, and manufacturers. Past clients include, LMC, Huttig Building Products, James Hardie Building Products, and Louisiana-Pacific Corporation.
